History
Founded in 2002, the Medical Student Mentorship Program pairs current medical students at the John A. Burns School of Medicine with undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in medicine. MSMP provides support to students applying to medical school and helps to foster relationships between undergraduates and medical students and faculty.
Mentors and mentees are paired according to their academic and extra-curricular interests. Mentorship pairs participate in a variety of activities throughout the year.
How do I become a mentor?
Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction.
Being medical students ourselves, we understand that you have a lot on your plate. We promise that your duties as a mentor won’t interfere with your ability to finish LIs, cut into your clinical hours, or conflict with exam schedules (we take these things into consideration when planning!).
Mentor Requirements:
Be a current medical student at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine.
Be positive, encouraging, and supportive.
Be open-minded.
Note: there are no membership fees to become a mentor.
As a mentor, we also ask for the following:
Contact your mentee at least once a month (e.g. e-mail, phone, or face-to-face meeting).
Arrange at least one face-to-face meeting with your mentee during the academic year.
Based on your own experiences, help your mentee develop a career/education plan in medicine.
If applicable, suggest additional resources to help your mentee’s academic and professional development.
Do not lose contact with your mentee!

How do I become a mentee?
Whether you’re just beginning to explore a career in medicine or are actively preparing to apply, MSMP is an opportunity to connect with someone who has recently gone through the process themselves.
Mentee Requirements:
Be an undergraduate student or college graduate interested in pursuing a career in medicine.
Be willing to actively participate in the mentorship relationship.
Be open-minded and receptive to advice and feedback.
Be respectful, communicative, and supportive of your mentor.
As a mentee, we ask that you:
Maintain communication with your mentor throughout the academic year.
Come prepared with questions and topics you would like to discuss.
What can I expect from my mentor?
Your mentor can be a resource as you explore a career in medicine. Depending on your needs and interests, they may help you:
Learn more about the medical school application process and medical student experience.
Advice for MCAT studying, applications, and interview preparation.
Explore opportunities for clinical experience, research, volunteering, and leadership.
Prepare for the transition from undergraduate education to medical school.
Connect you with additional resources when appropriate.
